How long does it take to get a green card?

  • 2 Min read

For those dreaming of making the United States their permanent home, the green card is the ultimate goal. It is the key to a future of stability and opportunity. But one of the most common and frustrating questions that applicants face is, "How long does it take to get a green card?"

Unfortunately, the answer is complex and varies dramatically from person to person. There is no single, simple timeline. The wait can range from several months to more than a decade.

The processing time for a green card depends on a number of factors, including the category of the application, the applicant's country of origin, and the backlogs at U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS)

Not knowing can be one of the most stressful parts of the immigration process. This article will provide a realistic overview of the different green card timelines and explain the factors that influence how long you might have to wait.

The two main paths to a green card

There are many ways to become eligible for a green card, but most applicants fall into one of two main categories: family-based or employment-based.

Family-based green cards

This is the most common way people get a green card. U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents can sponsor certain family members. The timeline depends on the relationship.

Immediate relatives

This category is for the spouse, unmarried children under 21, and parents of a U.S. citizen. There is no annual limit on the number of green cards available for immediate relatives. Because of this, the process is generally faster.

Currently, the wait time for this category is typically between 9 and 15 months.

Family preference categories

This is for other family relationships, such as the siblings of a U.S. citizen or the spouse and children of a permanent resident. There are strict annual limits on the number of green cards available in these categories.

This creates a long waiting list. The wait time can range from 2 years to more than 15 years, depending on the category and the applicant's country of origin.

Employment-based green cards

U.S. employers can sponsor foreign workers for a green card. The process is complex and involves multiple steps. First, the employer must go through a process called PERM labor certification to prove that there are no qualified U.S. workers available for the job. This step alone can take 18 to 24 months.

After that, the employer files a petition for the worker. Like the family categories, there are annual limits, which can create long waits, especially for applicants from certain countries.

The Visa Bulletin and priority dates

For all categories with annual limits, the wait time is managed by the Visa Bulletin. This is a monthly publication from the U.S. Department of State that shows which applications can move forward.

When an application is filed, it is assigned a "priority date." The applicant must wait until their priority date is "current" on the Visa Bulletin before they can get their green card. This is what creates the long backlogs, which can sometimes stretch on for years.

And finally, the adjustment of status

Once an applicant's priority date is current, they can file the final application, Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status. The processing time for this form alone can take anywhere from 7 to 33 months, according to USCIS. After the I-485 is approved, the physical green card is typically mailed out within 90 days.

The question of "how long does it take to get a green card?" has no easy answer. The honest answer is that it depends, and for many, the wait stretches into years. The process is long, complex, and often frustrating. Annual caps and per-country limits create backlogs that can feel endless.

When faced with such extended uncertainty, people throughout history have turned to the night sky for reassurance. The stars move in slow, predictable patterns, reminding us that even the longest journeys follow their own rhythm. The planets complete their orbits whether we watch them or not. But now, having this legal knowledge can transform helpless anxiety into informed patience.

Frequently asked questions

Why does it take so long to get a green card?

The main reason for the long waits is the annual numerical limits set by law on most green card categories. This creates a demand that is much higher than the available supply. When people ask, "How long does it take to get a green card?" the answer depends heavily on these caps, which create backlogs lasting years or even decades.

Is there any way to speed up the process?

For some employment-based categories, an employer can pay for "premium processing" for one stage of the process. However, for most applicants, especially in family-based categories, there is no way to speed up the wait caused by backlogs. The timeline is largely out of individual control.

Does my country of origin matter?

Yes. The law includes per-country limits, which means that applicants from countries with a high volume of applications, such as Mexico, India, China, and the Philippines, often face much longer waits than applicants from other countries. Two people in the same category can have vastly different timelines based solely on where they were born.

Where can I check the current processing times?

USCIS provides a tool on its website to check processing times for various forms. The Visa Bulletin is published monthly by the Department of State and shows the current priority dates. These resources help you track where you stand in the queue.
